An Introduction to Zohar, the Mystical Commentary on the Torah
Tuesdays, January 19, 26 and February 2 from 7:00-8:30 pm
Rabbi Lavey Derby
The Zohar is the central and essential text of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism.) It functions as a mystical midrash, or commentary, on the Torah. It offers a unique and radical interpretation of Torah and serves as a challenge to our usual assumptions about what Torah means and what God is.
Over three sessions, we will study selected texts from the Zohar that introduce the world of the sefirot (The 10 manifestations of the Divine) and the esoteric inner drama of the Divine Being.
No prior knowledge of Kabbalah is necessary. All texts will be read in English
Rabbi Lavey Derby has been teaching classes in Zohar and the meaning and practice of Kabbalah for over 30 years in Jewish communities across the country. He serves as the Director of Jewish Life at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center.
